Early Childhood and Parenting Collaborative at the University of IllinoisAbout ECAP

The Early Childhood and Parenting Collaborative at the University of Illinois is home to more than a dozen projects focused on the education, care, and parenting of young children.

Located at the Children's Research Center in a setting conducive to interdisciplinary research, teaching, and public service, these projects share their expertise and experience, a library, and common meeting spaces. Several projects share key personnel. The structure provided by the Early Childhood and Parenting Collaborative enables us to articulate, clarify, and enhance the cooperative relationships that exist among these projects, and to strengthen their national visibility.

Since 1997, the Making Learning Visible Project has made important progress in helping American educators learn how to incorporate a group learning perspective in their thinking and practice. In Phase I of the project, the Reggio Emilia and Project Zero research teams analyzed and documented the power of the group as a learning environment and the role of documentation in helping to support and make visible individual and group learning. This work was based primarily on the Italian experience in early childhood settings. We produced a book, Making Learning Visible: Children as Individual and Group Learners (Project Zero and Reggio Children, 2001), which describes the results of our research and provides a framework for understanding and supporting individual and group learning based in the theory and practice of the Reggio Emilia schools.
