The Nature Walk

Smart Start is located right next to the wonderful Coppell Hike and Bike Trail. This trail has been a learning provocation about nature for our students at Smart Start.  We have seen many interesting animals: armadillos, red tailed hawks, turtles, beavers and much more. As shown on the following pictures, children's ideas, concepts and interests are emerging and are developed by taking the walk and the items they collected on their walk. Many times the children are given tools such as paper and pencils to sketch their ideas. Children are not just expected to represent art and writing but represent their ideas through art and writing.

What kinds of animals live on the trail? What kinds of habitats do animals have? What are the behaviors of the animals? How do rivers flow? What kinds of things are people built and what things are by nature? Who uses the trail and why?

The children found one use on the playground at the end of the adventurous walk!
