How do kites fly?

Phase 1

The children began their interests in kites when the weather became windy and the teacher took them out into the open field to fly a kite. They made a paper mache kite with their art teacher. They were very interested in making it fly. The children came up with theories on how to make their paper mache kite fly.  One idea was to put a worm on it. It didn't work. The children requested to begin making a new kidn of kite that would fly.

Phase 2

By listening to their ideas, the teachers brought in literature, other kites, and researched kites on the internet. The children figured out that their paper mache kite was too heavy. They began to plan how to build a kite. The children decided on size, design and roles they would play in creating the kite. After creating a materials list, a few students went to the local art supply store and bought the items. They asked an expert in the store to help them. The children built the kite. After the many hours of preparation, the kite was ready to fly.

Phase 3

The kite did not fly as long and great as their store bought kite. They concluded that the material was not the same and didn't fly as well because the rest was the same. The student's seemed happy with that conclusion and decided to continue to fly their store bought kite on windy days.
