What are these bugs doing?
The children have had the opportunity to go on the nature trail of Coppell directly from our facility. Below the children are observing bugs in their natural habitat. These hands-on experiences inspire our children to want to know and investigate more thoroughly. Teachers bring these animals into the classroom to observe. Children are given time to observe and think about "Why?" Many times the children will have several opportunities to observe life cycles in order to create and construct theories. For instance, children may study a metamorphosis of a caterpillar to a butterfly several times in order to understand the similarities an differences of butterflies. Teachers will bring in non-fiction books and their class internet to help children resolve their ideas.

Bugs have been a big interest. Children have been able to examine, research and classify many bugs. In addition to collecting, observing and defining the scientific life cycle of various animals, the children expressed their ideas in varous ways. Below is an example of a literacy representation.. Our 4-year-old class created the following Bug Book. Each child chose a bug they desired to represent and was asked to then describe their illustration. As children wrote their ideas, they implemented their knowledge of phonics, sight words, grammar, and literary context & cues ... the components all writers use. The teacher helped link their existing knowledge to new of writing as she individually consulted with each child as they wrote their words.
